Being Human

I’ve been feeling sick last week. When I don’t feel really well, I can’t really read as well. I don’t know why, it simply gives me a headache after a while. So I usually end up watching movies or TV.

Because I don’t have the cable, I bought a couple of series this week. One of them is a series I bought on an impulse. Being Human. I hadn’t heard anything about it, but it was a UK series from BBC. I found that they often create really good series that we then steal from them (They did a US version after that.)

Have you ever heard the one about a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost living together? Well for George, Mitchell and Annie, that's no joke; that's their life... or afterlife as the case may be. The supernatural trio share a rented house, desperately trying to balance their paranormal problems with the challenge of simply Being Human.

I can now say that I’m addicted to this series. The biggest problem with this series is that it is too short! Only six episodes. Yet, they were so good. Six episodes of horrors, comedy and mystery. I wouldn’t recommend this series to a younger audience.

What do you do when you're sick? Do you read? Watch movies? Watch TV?

What's one of your favorite series right now?

Review: Everlasting

Title: Everlasting
Author:Alyson Noël
Release Date: June 7th, 2011
Series: The Immortals #6
Number of Pages: 320
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Source: Bought
Everlasting is the sixth and final installment of the epic love story that has enchanted readers across the world. Ever and Damen have spent centuries facing down bitter rivals, jealous friends and their own worst fears-all in the hope of being together forever. Now in Everlasting, their destiny is finally within reach.
Will they be united-or torn apart forever? Readers will finally discover the truth in this anxiously awaited conclusion!
I enjoy this book, mainly because I loved this series. It wasn’t what I was expecting before I start reading it. Still, after a couple of pages, the story line became predictable. I guessed easily what would happen next. It didn’t make the book boring or anything. I was simply expecting something a little more exciting and unpredictable. It was nice to say the way the series ended, because it was satisfying. It gives us closer. Yet, I wanted to be surprised.

I thought Ever was annoying during the first books. In this one, she seems to get a little more maturity and assurance. She wasn’t as naïve and impulsive in this one, which was a great thing! In this book, it was Damen that got on my nerves. He felt a little to self-centered. That’s the feeling I got. It just really annoyed me. The other thing that made me sad is that Miles wasn’t there enough. I want him to read more of him. I love him! He is so sweet.

The series is a fun romance. I really enjoy this series, but I don’t think this book was the best of this series. If you enjoyed the series, you’ll probably enjoy this one!

Review: Cryptic Cravings

Title: Cryptic Cravings
Author: Ellen Schreiber
Release Date: May 17th, 2011
Series: Vampire Kisses #8
Number of Pages: 211
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Source: Bought

The morbidly monotonous Dullsville has finally become the most exciting place on earth now that Raven is madly in love with her hot vampire boyfriend Alexander, and a crew of vampires has taken residence in Dullsville's old mill. Raven discovers Jagger's plan to open a new club, The Crypt, right here in Dullsville. But is it her dream come true, or her worst nightmare? Raven and Alexander have to figure out what the nefarious vampire has in store for Dullsville's teen and vampire population. Can Raven convince Jagger to listen to her plans to make the Crypt the morbidly magnificent dance club it could be? Will it be safe for mortals and vampires alike?
And as Sebastian and Luna's relationship heats up, Raven wonders about her own amorous fate: Will Alexander ever turn her? Does he crave her and does he want to spend eternity together? And what does she really want?
With cryptic secrets and cravings, this eighth installment in the Vampire Kisses series is a romantic and mysterious thrill ride.
This series is seriously my guilty pleasure. It is fun, cute and it makes me smile everytime I turn a new page.

The story is addicting. It is a simply a vampire romance that satisfy my girly side. I simply adore it. It is a guilty pleasure because it isn’t the kind of books that I would go around telling everyone I’m reading and loving it. Why? Because I know that most of my friends would think it is a girly romance, a childish story about, again, vampire. So what? I like it!

Raven is a good character, but I have to say that I completely adore Alexander. He is so sweet. And dreamy. If I had to get a vampire boyfriend, it would be him. Screw Edward, I prefer Alexander (well, in YA, because I totally team Vampire Eric.) I can’t wait to see what will happen next for Alexander and Raven, because I want him to be happy. I don’t really care about Raven a much. I don’t really know why… Oh well, it happens...

Can I say that the blood part between Raven and Alexander made me squeal! (Anyone else??? Maybe I'm the only one...)

This story is great for anyone looking for a fun and light vampire romance for the summer. It made me smile and laugh, because it is that good!

Review: Wintergirls

Title: Wintergirls
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
Release Date: March 19th, 2009
Series: None
Number of Pages: 278
Publisher: Speak
Source: Bought

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.
Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her step-mother is clueless. And the voice inside Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way—thin, thinner, thinnest—maybe she'll disappear altogether.
In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the National Book Award finalist Speak, best-selling author Laurie Halse Anderson explores one girl's chilling descent into the all-consuming vortex of anorexia.

I had been looking for this book for a while, because I had heard many great comments about Laurie Halse Anderson. I haven’t read Speak yet, but I have seen the movie a while back. I was curious about this one, because I have read novels about anorexia before.

The story starts when Lia’s friend, Cassie died. Lia was already anorexic, and she even had been in a center for anorexic. It was strange to read the point of view of an anorexic. She is hiding everything from her family, because of it. It is also strange to see the internal turmoil that she is going true. The voice in her head telling her not to eat, while the other part of her is hungry. It helps understand what is going on in an anorexic head.

I had trouble connecting with Lia. Maybe because she is so different from me. I can’t see myself starving. I love food. It was hard to connect with someone going through that, because I can’t really relate to that. Yet, it made me understand about the difficulties that come with getting better. The voices don’t want to go. They’re still there, nagging her.

Even thought I can’t say it is an entertaining and fun book, I have to say it was captivating. I couldn’t keep my mind of this book. I had to know what would happen. I had to know if she would get better, if she would beat this illness. This book was different from other books on the same subject, because we get into Lia’s head, as she is already deep in anorexia. I really liked the book, and I will probably pick more books by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Review: Possession

Title: Possession
Author: Elana Johnson
Release Date: June 7th, 2011
Series: Possession #1
Number of Pages: 405
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Source: Bought
Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.
But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.
This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.
Arg. I was hoping to love this book. From what I had heard of it, it sounded so good. Yet, I was left disappointed.

The first problem for me was that the first thought that came to my mind when I started this book was “Oh didn’t I read a lot of similar books in the last few months?” It felt like I had already read that story with other characters. Characters that I had connected a little more with. Once the story really gets moving, it moves really fast. I wish things could have gone a little slower, so we can really get what is going on. One of the things I just couldn’t keep up with was the time frame. I still can’t really say how long the story lasts. The ending made me want to throw the book out of my window. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. Not because it was horrible, simply because that’s probably the last thing I wanted for Vi. OF course, I wasn’t sure if there was supposed to be a sequel, which there will be. Now I feel less anger.

The characters weren’t that amazing to me. I was just annoyed with Violet so often that I couldn’t connect with her. Jag was better, but once in a while, he made me want to punch him in the face for being dishonest so often with Violet. I kind of like Zenn, simply because once the story really began, I could understand his position and choices more easily.

Elena Johnson’s writing was great, but she really made the story go too fast for my taste. I wish I could have had the time to really get into the story, which I wasn’t really able to do.

Overall, I liked it, but it wouldn’t be the book on top of my list if I had to recommend a new dystopian novel to one of my friends. Yet, I’ll still go and pick the sequel up when it comes out, because I enjoyed it.

In My Mailbox 15

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by Kristi from  the Story Siren
Here is what I got this week!

This week, I didn't really buy any books... I was expecting some books form the Book Depository, books I had bought before Canada Post went on strike... They did arrived. Yet, my postman was simply too lazy to bring them. He just left four little pieces of paper telling me that I had four package waiting for me. I saw them at noon Thursday... and I was home all day long. So my lazy postman just didn't want to carry them. And Friday it was closed, because of Canada Day. Saturday I was working and the post office is closed on Sunday. So I'll have to leave early on Monday to get them... Sigh.

Still, I got a few e-arcs this week from NetGalley:

-Tris and Izzie by Mette Evie Harrison
-Blood by K.J. Wignall
-Brooklyn, Burning by Steve Brezenoff
-The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle
-Lost in Dream by Roger Bruner
-Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick
-Frost by Wendy Delsol

So here is what I got this week. What did you get?

Coming Out This Month: July

I've stopped doing the Waiting on Wednesday, but I want to share the books I'm excited to get my hands on. So here are the books coming this month that I can't wait to read!

Starstruck by Cyn Balog (July 12th)

Gwendolyn "Dough" X doesn't think she has much going for her—she carries a few extra pounds, her family struggles with their small bakery in a town full of millionaires, and the other kids at her New Jersey high school don't seem to know that she exists. Thank the stars for her longtime boyfriend, Philip P. Wishman—or "Wish." He moved away to California three years ago, when they were 13, but then professed his love for her via e-mail, and he's been her long-distance BF ever since.

At the beginning of her junior year, though, Wish e-mails that he's moving back to Jersey. Great, right? Well, except that Dough has gained about 70 pounds since the last time Wish saw her, while Wish—according to his Facebook photos—has morphed into a blonde god. Convinced that she'll be headed for Dumpsville the minute Wish lays eyes on her, Dough delays their meeting as long as she possibly can.
But when she sees Wish at school, something amazing happens. He looks at Dough like she's just as gorgeous as he is. But Wish is acting a little weird, obsessed with the sun and freaked out by rain. And the creepy new guy working at the bakery, Christian, is convinced that there's more to Wish's good looks than just healthy eating and lots of sun. He tells Dough that a mark on Wish's neck marks him as a member of the Luminati—an ancient cult of astrologers who can manipulate the stars to improve their lives. Is Wish and Dough's love meant to be—or are they star-crossed?

Supernaturally by Kiersten White (july26th)

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.
But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.
So much for normal.

Bad Taste In Boys by Carrie Harris (July 12th)

Someone's been a very bad zombie.

Kate Grable is horrified to find out that the football coach has given the team steroids. Worse yet, the steroids are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe--not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate!
She's got to find an antidote--before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town. . . and stay hormonally human.
