I'm back!

Hi guys! I’m back! Sorry I haven’t been around much for the last few weeks, I needed some time for me. I was in a little book funk and I just had to relax.

Review: Fever by Lauren DeStefano

Wow. First, I have to say that I completely adored the first book, Wither. I absolutely fell in love with the world Lauren DeStefano has created, which is why I was extremely excited to get a copy of Fever from Simon & Schuster Canada. I simply devoured this book once I got it, even though I had exams to study for. The cover of this book, when compare to the first book really represents the story, which I think was really a great bonus. I know many readers didn’t like it, but once you read the book, you understand why it is that way.

I have to say DeStefano didn’t disappoint with the sequel. The book kept me captivated from page one. This sequel gives us a better view of what is happening in the world, outside of the mansion. We see that Rhine actually had it easy in the mansion, as the world is cruel. I don’t want to give too much away, as I would really hate to spoil anyone story. All I can say is that DeStefano did it again: She got me addicted to her writing, to her style and to her story.  

I really enjoyed the new characters. Maddie, Madame, Annabelle and Lilac were nice additions to this series, especially since I’m not a big fan of Gabriel. I find him a little flat (I prefer Linden!) I really enjoyed the interaction between Maddie and Rhine. It brought a little bit of hope to this sequel that is slightly darker than the first book. Madame was creepy, but really added something to everything Rhine was going through. All she had to live made her grow. Rhine became a little less whiny and more mature. I liked her more and more. I can’t wait to see where all of this will influence her choices in book three. I’m already dying to read it.

Fever was an amazing sequel to an excellent debut. It is seriously a must read if you enjoyed Wither. If you haven’t read Wither yet, all I can say to you is: Read it soon!!

There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Pure was one of these novels that I was really hoping to love, yet didn’t really work out for me. It simply wasn’t for me. The thing is, it took me while to really get into the book. Well, even when I got a little more into the story, I still felt a distance that I couldn’t make disappear. I think there are novels like this one that just won’t work for everyone. It doesn’t mean they aren’t good. I have to give it to Julianna Baggott, the story is original and the world is well built. Thing is, I was missing something.

The ideas behind the characters were amazingly interesting, yet I wish she could have given more. I mean some characters were supposedly in love with another character, yet I never felt anything of that during the novel. Suddenly, they are telling each other that they care. I simply wished we could have had a little more information about the characters through the novel. Hopefully, we’ll get more through the rest of the series.

One of the things I think is really great in this novel is the multiple points of views.  It gave us a better understanding of the world the story is set in, as they all come from different background. I have to say that I do prefer Pressia as the narrator. Well, I did prefer her as a character too, so that’s a given...

One of the things that may stop you when you first start reading this novel is the slow beginning. Give it a chance. It does seem to speed up through the book.

Finally, one of the things I have to give to Julianna Baggott is that this book is beautifully written. Readers that don’t enjoy dystopian will probably find it hard to love this book, especially if you have trouble with worlds that sounds slightly familiar, yet with an extremely horrible outcome for the future of the human race.

This is one those kinds of novels I believe one need to try to make up their mind. I know that many readers loved it. Yet, it simply didn’t work out for me.

Review: The Disenchantments by Nina Lacour

I won this book from Razorbill, and I was really excited to read it. I hadn’t read Nina Lacour’s first book, but The Disenchantments sounded like my kind of books. First, I have to say that I did enjoy this book, once I got into it. It took me a while to get into the story, but it was worth it.

The story was fun. We follow Colby and his friends’ band, The Disenchantments, as they tour. That sounds like a great and fun story that will be filled with fun anecdotes of what can happen on tour. Well, Colby is in love with one of the band member, Bev, who’s also his best friends. He’s planning to leave for Europe with her, only to learn once on tour that she will be going to college instead. At first, I wasn’t really interested in the story between those two, simply because I don’t like Bev. I was hoping he would fall for Meg, one of the two sisters, as Meg and Alexia were a lot more fun than Bev. I simply hated the fact that the only thing Bev seemed to be doing was leading Colby on. Still, I got to understand her a little more after a while. That’s when Colby I wanted to punch Colby in the face so he would wake up. He simply was too caught up with Bev to realize that there was much more going. He’s 18! Time to grow up a little, no?

Even though I really liked the road trip, with everything that went on with the four of them, I had one major problem with the book at the end. I was seriously confused with the book. I felt like the story only lasted a week in one sense, but on the other end, it felt like the book covers the entire summer. I’m not sure if it’s just me, or if anyone else felt the same (if you did, please tell me!)

Overall, I did enjoy the novel. It may have taken me a while to get into the story, but by the end, I simply couldn’t put it down. It was a great contemporary, which will probably please its fan.
