Arg. I was hoping to love this book. From what I had heard of it, it sounded so good. Yet, I was left disappointed.
The first problem for me was that the first thought that came to my mind when I started this book was “Oh didn’t I read a lot of similar books in the last few months?” It felt like I had already read that story with other characters. Characters that I had connected a little more with. Once the story really gets moving, it moves really fast. I wish things could have gone a little slower, so we can really get what is going on. One of the things I just couldn’t keep up with was the time frame. I still can’t really say how long the story lasts. The ending made me want to throw the book out of my window. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. Not because it was horrible, simply because that’s probably the last thing I wanted for Vi. OF course, I wasn’t sure if there was supposed to be a sequel, which there will be. Now I feel less anger.
The characters weren’t that amazing to me. I was just annoyed with Violet so often that I couldn’t connect with her. Jag was better, but once in a while, he made me want to punch him in the face for being dishonest so often with Violet. I kind of like Zenn, simply because once the story really began, I could understand his position and choices more easily.
Elena Johnson’s writing was great, but she really made the story go too fast for my taste. I wish I could have had the time to really get into the story, which I wasn’t really able to do.
Overall, I liked it, but it wouldn’t be the book on top of my list if I had to recommend a new dystopian novel to one of my friends. Yet, I’ll still go and pick the sequel up when it comes out, because I enjoyed it.
I like Zenn too! I wish we could have seen more of him though.
ReplyDeleteI actually really liked this book, but I understand what you mean about it going to fast. I didn't really feel the romance between Violet and Jag and I think that is because of the pacing. If the story had more time to develop, I think there would have been more chemistry.
