In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

First of all, I really liked this cover; even it isn’t an especially gorgeous one. I think that it fits really well with the story.

The Story was extremely good. I was afraid at first to be disappointed because of all the good reviews I had read, but even with my high expectations, I was happy. This postapocalyptic story is so captivating. The ending fitted so well with the story. It wasn’t what I expected, but it was just perfect for it, as it kept the story realistic. Or rather as realistic as it can be in a postapocalyptic world.

The characters were realistic and well written. Mary was an excellent main character, because I felt like I could connect with her. I like that from a main character. Also, I really liked Sister Tabitha, because she seemed to truly believe in what she was doing, even if it made her sometimes (read here often) one of the bad guys.

I really enjoyed Carrie Ryan’s style of writing. I think it fits the story really well. She captivated me from the first line, until the last.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I can’t wait to read its companion The Dead-Tossed Waves. 9.5/10
